Is CBD Safe for Drug-Tested Athletes?

By ATLAUA · Updated July 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: CBD itself is allowed, but the product you choose is what determines your risk. If you are subject to anti-doping testing, this is the one thing you cannot get wrong.

CBD is allowed. THC is not.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its Prohibited List in 2018, and it remains permitted both in and out of competition. THC, however, is still prohibited in competition. That single distinction is where athletes get caught out.

The real risk is contamination, not CBD

The danger is not cannabidiol. It is that many products labeled "CBD" contain trace THC that can build up in your system. A widely cited analysis published in JAMA found that around a quarter of CBD products sold online were mislabeled, and many "full spectrum" products carry more THC than the label claims.

You are not tested on your intentions. You are tested on what is in the bottle.
